The Greyboy Allstars have been playing together for more than three decades -- an incredible feat for any band. And so in late 2023, as they approached the milestone, the ensemble took a look back at tunes they loved -- many of which were staples of their live show -- that'd never made it on to one of their studio albums. And the nine-cut Grab Bag: 2007-2023 was born. Each of the songs here didn't fit on whichever album they were originally recorded for -- but sequenced together in this retrospective compilation, they fuse together into an easy to-love, often electrifying album. The band came together in 1993 as the 'allstars' of legendary cratedigger DJ Greyboy's in house record label; over the past few decades, they've become one of the most beloved groove bands working the jam scene. When they unite on stage or in the studio, saxophonist Karl Denson, keyboardist Robert Walter, guitarist Elgin Park, bassist Chris Stillwell and drummer Aaron Redfield create tight, punchy, heavy boogie-down jams. Grab Bag commences with a smooth intro -- "Slip the Grip," an easy going and fluid tune with a saxophone-guitar lick that opens up for some passed-around improvisation and really kicks up some dust once Denson digs in. But the collection really sparks with "Speed Freak," a true-to-its title rave-up built on a lightning speed guitar riff that gives Denson something special to play with -- and his soloing builds into a screaming climax. On the back half, the Allstars tackle a sweet, organ-led cover of Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel" that'll make you do a double take. Fans of funk should be thankful that The Greyboy Allstars cleared out the archives to release Grab Bag -- and even more excited for whatever comes next.
