Man arrested after trying to board Gozo ferry following shop hold-up

A man has been arrested trying to board the Gozo Channel ferry to Malta, after allegedly being involved in a hold-up in Xagħra.

The robbery took place in a grocery shop in Vjal it-8 ta' Settembru on Thursday at 8pm, police said.

Officers went on site and investigations revealed that a man entered the shop with a firearm, grabbed a cash drawer full of money, and fled the scene. The police said the man left the shop in a vehicle, where other accomplices were waiting.

No one was injured.

Further investigations revealed the car had been stolen some time before from Xewkija.

While searching for the thief, the police received information that one of the accomplices was at Mġarr Harbour. The police went to the scene and arrested the man who they said was attempting to flee to Malta.

Police continue with their search for a second person who is allegedly involved in the robbery.

Magistrate Simone Grech is holding an inquiry. Police investigations are underway.
