Governor Newsom allocates $32.4M to for extreme heat tool CalHeatScore

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Governor Gavin Newsom is investing $32.4 million to help communities combat extreme heat, the Newsom administration announced on Thursday, May 29, 2025. The state has launched CalHeatScore, a cutting-edge tool designed to forecast and rank heat severity risks, connecting Californians with resources to stay safe during extreme heat events.

According to the governor's office, California is the first state in the nation to implement a heat ranking system. This announcement comes as the Trump administration makes cuts to the federal government's weather monitoring apparatus.

CalHeatScore utilizes zip code level data to provide locally tailored guidance, identifying groups most susceptible to extreme heat, such as older adults and children. The tool also offers safety tips and signs of heat illness.
