Current Vanuatu Volcano Alert Level: Level 2

The Yasur volcano activity continues in the major unrest state. The Yasur Volcanic Alert Level remains at Level 2.

Major volcanic unrest at Yasur continues and remains confined to the volcanic crater. Latest observations and data analysis have confirmed that the conditions of Yasur's activity remains unstable and suggest that its activity is likely to continue at a similar level, consistent with volcanic alert level 2. The volcanic hazards danger zone remains limited to Danger Zone A (600-meter radius from the eruptive vents inside the crater).

Recent photos via webcam have shown that Yasur's volcanic activity consists of continuous explosions, with volcanic cloud emissions that may contain water vapor (steam), gases, and/or ash. Latest satellite images have also confirmed volcanic degassing, and images from February 12th, 13th, and 16th, 2025, showed low thermal anomalies, indicating an increase in surface temperature around the volcano due to the presence of magma near the Earth's surface. The analysis of seismic data have confirmed continued major volcanic unrest activity at Yasur and some explosions remain strong.

The Yasur volcanic alert level has been at level 2 since 18th October 2016. The current observations are consistent with Volcanic Alert Level 2 activity. Level 2 indicates "Major Unrest, with a volcanic hazards danger zone of 600 m radius from the eruptive vents". With this current volcanic activity, it is a useful reminder that eruptions can occur with little or no warnings.

All tourism agencies, visitors, local authorities, people on Tanna Island, and the general public are strongly reminded that the volcanic hazards danger zone remains within the Danger Zone A (see Yasur Caldera Safety Map below), which is about 600-meter radius from the eruptive vents. This zone is hazardous due to volcanic projectiles, ash, and gases. Volcanic bombs may fall in and around the crater rim. Visitors to Yasur should expect volcanic projectiles, gas, and ash while approaching the crater. Villages located in and around the caldera, particularly those exposed to prevailing trade winds, will continue to experience volcanic ash fall and acid rain when the volcanic cloud reaches several kilometers in height. The Yasur volcano safety map, visitor's fact sheet, and information about volcanic hazards are available at the link following : https://www.vmgd.gov.vu/geohazards/volcanoes/yasur

The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geohazards Department continues to closely monitor this volcano activity. More information will be provided when necessary.
