After a narrow one-goal loss in its season home opener, the Hutchinson girls hockey team got its first win of the season in dominant fashion when it blasted the Marshall Tigers 7-1 on the road Friday.
Hutch's game against Marshall was different from its home opener in many ways, but similar in others. Unlike the loss to Princeton, the Hutch Tigers didn't have an early deficit to come back from. The defense and goalie Quin McCormick kept Marshall scoreless until the third period.
There weren't nearly as many power plays, either, as both teams only had one penalty each the whole game.
What was the same, though, is that the Tigers scored early and often, and had goals from multiple players. Four to be exact.
Hutch opened the game with Addie Roling scoring her first goal of the season on Hutch's only power play of the night. It was a 1-0 score after the first period, but the Hutch Tigers were just warming up.
In the second period seventh-grader Alex Hantge scored her second and third goals of the season within 30 seconds of each other, giving her team some breathing room. Just before the period ended, Emma Berthiaume also scored her second goal of the season to give Hutch a 4-0 lead going into the locker room.
The third period started with Hantge scoring another goal to complete her first career varsity hat trick. Berthiaume also scored again about a minute later, and two minutes after her Ellie Larson netted her first goal of the season to give Hutch a 7-0 lead.
Only after Hutch had scored all of its goals did Marshall finally answer with its only goal of the night. Hutch outshot Marshall 30-10, and McCormick had nine saves.
The Hutch Tigers (1-1) were scheduled to play on the road Tuesday against St. Peter/LeSueur-Henderson. On Thursday they are back home at 7 p.m. at Burich Arena for a big Section 2A rivalry game against Mankato East/Loyola.
