DENVER (KDVR) -- Police say they are now investigating an arson case as a double homicide after two people were found dead of gunshot wounds inside a Thornton home that caught fire on Wednesday night.
According to the Thornton Police Department, the structure fire was reported at about 11:15 p.m. on Feb. 26 in the 16000 block of Columbine Street in the Orchard Farms neighborhood. The agency said that first responders found a 58-year-old woman and a 55-year-old man both dead inside the home with apparent gunshot wounds.
Fire investigators additionally determined the fire was set intentionally, but said the exact cause and circumstances remain under investigation. By midnight, the fire was cleared.
Investigators said Thursday that there is no ongoing threat to the community, and that they did not believe anyone else was inside the home at the time of the fire.
On Friday, the agency announced that its investigation led to confirmation that this case is a double homicide. Detectives as of Friday evening were still processing the crime scene and following up on leads to gather suspect information.
