Eldon's Simmons wins twice to advance to semifinals in Class 2 | Jefferson City News-Tribune

COLUMBIA -- Eldon senior Jesiah Simmons needed just 31 seconds on the mat Wednesday to punch his ticket to the semifinals of the Class 2 boys state wrestling championships at Mizzou Arena.

Simmons finished 2-0 in the 113-pound bracket on Day 1 to move his season record to 32-0 and advance to the semifinals, where he will face Will Erickson (39-10) of Cameron today.

Simmons used all 31 seconds of his mat time in his opening round match against Prestyn Tidwell of Dexter before winning by fall.

Simmons then received a win by medical forfeit in his quarterfinal match to clinch his third state medal.

At the end of Day 1, Odessa tops the Class 2 boys team standings with 72.5 points, Seneca is next at 69 and St. Genevieve is in third with 63.5.

Simmons has earned Eldon 11 points, which is 29th in the team standings.

Action will resume for the Class 2 boys with semifinals and third-round wrestlebacks at 12:15 p.m. Third- and fifth-place matches are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and the championship matches are scheduled to start at 5:45 p.m.

Southern Boone junior Grant Leininger is the lone Eagle left after Day 1.

Leininger won both matches at 150 pounds to clinch his first state medal.

Leininger opened with a 16-0 win by technical fall in the opening round against Benjamin Schroeder of Father Tolton, and he accumulated the 16 points in just 2:40 on the mat.

Leininger then advanced to the semifinals for the first time with an 11-3 win by major decision against Deagen Pasley of Savannah.

Leininger will face Odessa's Caiden Davidson (32-7) in the semifinals today.

Four Southern Boone wrestlers had their season come to an end Wednesday.

Peter Heyen finished 0-2 at 106, ending his season with a 31-11 record.

Blaine Bergthold responded from a first-round loss at 126 with a win by fall in 3:43 in first-round wrestlebacks, but he dropped his next match to end his season with a 24-13 record.

Kaid Shaw went 1-2 at 132 with a win by medial default and finished the year with a 28-12 record.

Owen Britton went 1-2 at 157 with a win by fall in 2:18 in first-round wrestlebacks, finishing his freshman year 29-20, and Aidan Young dropped both matches at 285 to end his year 30-20.

Southern Boone enters Day 2 with 18.5 points, which is tied for 21st in the team standings.

The School of the Osage Indians advanced three of their four wrestlers into the final day of the Class 2 boys state championships.

Brock Arrowood (126 pounds), Nolan Schepers (138) and Amos Mundy (165) all went 2-1 Wednesday and are one win away from a state medal.

Arrowood opened his day with a pin in 29 seconds, then responded to a loss by technical fall in the quarterfinals with another win by fall (2:25) to move to the bubble round.

Arrowood (36-6) will face Carter Blankenship (30-11) of Sullivan in third-round wrestlebacks today and would clinch a second state medal with a win.

Schepers, a freshman, lost by decision in the first round, then he won an 11-8 decision and picked up a pin in 27 seconds in wrestlebacks to advance to today.

Schepers (30-8) will match up with Kirksville's Justin Schutter (47-4) in the bubble round today.

Mundy won his opening round match by fall in 3:14, then after a loss by decision in the quarterfinals, he won by fall in 1:34 to move into the bubble round.

Mundy (39-4) will face Henry Reed (39-12) of Monett in third-round wrestlebacks today. A win would give Mundy his first state medal.

Osage sits in 19th in the team standings with 20 points.

The California Pintos had their wrestling season come to an end Wednesday after all three of their wrestlers failed to advance to Day 2 of the Class 2 boys state wrestling championships.

Connor Farmer was the lone Pinto to win a match. Farmer won by fall in 4:49 in his first-round match at 113 pounds but dropped his next two, ending his season with a 34-12 record.

Talyn Balsley (106) and Traye Balsley (120) each finished 0-2. Talyn Balsley finished the year with a 31-16 record, and Traye Balsley ended the year 29-17.

California accumulated 4 points.
