Autopsy report reveals 6-year-old girl suffered blunt force trauma; traces of fentanyl found

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Franklin County Coroner's Office on Wednesday released the autopsy report for a 6-year-old Columbus girl who died in April. Her mother is charged in her death.

Eva Bretz died at Nationwide Children's Hospital on April 13. She was admitted after authorities said she suffered several life-threatening internal and external injuries. The coroner's office ruled her death a homicide.

The autopsy report revealed that Eva died from homicidal violence. She suffered blunt force abdominal trauma along with a severed liver. She also had a strangulation injury, which matches what police said about Eva having ligature marks around her neck.

According to the report, Eva also had fractures in her pelvis and left rib and healing contusions in her right hip and flank area. Her injuries also showed evidence of sexual assault.

The report stated that Eva's injuries "demonstrate a pattern of violence occurring for at least weeks, and probably months prior to the child's death."

Eva also tested positive for a trace amount of fentanyl, which was not administered by the hospital, according to a toxicology report.

Court documents state that Eva was in the care of her mother, 32-year-old Ashley Fagan, and her boyfriend, 24-year-old Blake Hutchinson, at the time of her death. Documents also say that the couple both made false statements about what happened to Eva and were not able to account for her injuries while she was in their care.

Fagan was indicted by a Franklin County grand jury for murder, involuntary manslaughter, obstructing justice, permitting child abuse and endangering children.

Hutchinson was also charged in Eva's death. He died by suicide earlier this month after being approached by Knox County SWAT personnel.
