'SNL' tackles troubling drinking habits in commercial parody for 'CouplaBeers' medication

Shane Gillis returned to "Saturday Night Live" for his second hosting gig on March 1, alongside musical guest Tate McRae.

The episode featured one of the late-night sketch comedy show's staples -- a commercial parody.

Gillis appeared in the fake advertisement for a new "medication" called CouplaBeers. At the beginning of the commercial, his character shared that "anxiety and depression were ruining" his life.

The comedian elaborated on his struggles, which included an inability to converse with his coworkers or pay attention to his wife. He also said he struggled to be a good father, as evidenced by a short clip of him yelling, "Come on, Andrew, you can't be bad at school and sports!" from the bleachers at his son's baseball game.

"I was at a real low point. That's when I talked to my doctor about CouplaBeers," Gillis explained. "CouplaBeers is a revolutionary medicine that treats anxiety and depression fast. And within minutes of taking it, I'm back to my old self."

Gillis experienced a marked personality change after taking a "dose" of CouplaBeers at his son's baseball game, telling his son how much he loved and support him.

After sharing that his "confidence is through the roof," instead of appearing awkward in the workplace, he transformed into the bully.

At one point, he called his colleague "stupid" before pulling down his pants in front of everyone and commented on his female coworker's body and appearance. But he brushed off his brashness as "having a tough time adjusting" to his new medication.

"So the way it works is simple. CouplaBeers quickly turns a cloudy, rainy day into a sunny one. It's that easy," Gillis said. "Now I'm the me I want to be, and I'm not the only one who's noticed."

The commercial parody claimed CouplaBeers was "a clinically proven treatment" for a variety of symptoms including "depression, winter, museum, hangovers, affair, moderate to severe Italian wife." However, it comes with the "common side effect" of drowsiness.

"So if you're ready to get your life back, talk to your doctor about a CouplaBeers," Gillis said in closing.

Ending the commercial, the camera showed family and friends of Gillis' character gathered in the living room, seemingly about to stage an intervention.

"Honey, can you come sit down. We need to talk," Heidi Gardner says.

"Mom and Dad! What are you guys doing here," Gillis adds, before the clip cut to black.

The new episode of "SNL" also featured a surprise cameo from former cast member Mike Myers. The actor appeared in the show's politically charged cold open as Elon Musk.

This marked Gillis' second time hosting "SNL," after making his hosting debut in February 2024. During his first monologue, he addressed his 2019 firing from the show, which occurred before the season even started.
