49ers make 14 surprise coaching moves including one who turned down interview

THE San Francisco 49ers are undergoing some major changes this offseason.

After a disappointing 2024 campaign, the San Francisco 49ers are flipping things on their heads for 2025.

Among the organizational changes the team is making is promoting Klay Kubiak to offensive coordinator.

The 49ers were one of the few teams ever to run their team without an official offensive coordinator.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan took on those duties alongside the job of the head coach.

However, a 6-11 season convinced him to bring in some help on the offense.

"I think Klay's done as much as anyone on offense these last two years," Shanahan said on January 8.

"This is his second year doing that and he gets better and better each year at it.

"Just hasn't had the official title yet and now he'll get the official title, which he more than deserves.

"But it's more about recognizing what he's already been doing at a high level."

On top of giving Kubiak the position of offensive coordinator, former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh has been hired as the team's defensive coordinator.

In fact, he is being re-hired as he served as the 49ers DC before being hired by the Jets.

"He a really good teacher so I think fundamentally they are going to be more sound, eliminate some of the big plays," former 49ers coach and current Houston Texans head coach Demeco Ryans said.

"He's going to be a stickler for the details and techniques. I think right there, you've got good players, it's a matter of getting everyone on the same page.

"I think you'll see instant improvement with Saleh."

Outside of Saleh, the 49ers made 14 coaching staff moves in an effort to bounce back from their rough 2024 season.

They should be able to draft a quality player to help them return to the playoffs in that position.

The 49ers also have around $50 million in cap space to use in free agency to pick up new players.

Offensive line, wide receiver, and cornerback could be especially important for San Francisco.
