Crews put out basement fire at Westport home on Christmas

Firefighters put out a basement fire at a home in Westport on Christmas.

Crews responded to a residence on Horseshoe Lane just after 9:30 p.m. after receiving a 911 call from the homeowner who reported a fire in the basement, according to Brett Kirby, assistant chief of the Westport Fire Department. The alarm company that monitored the home also contacted emergency responders.

The first firefighters on scene found that everyone in the home was able to get out safely, Kirby said. Crews then entered the home and found light smoke on the first floor. When they entered the basement, they found thick smoke throughout.

Firefighters were able to quickly locate the fire and put it out, containing it to a small area in the basement, according to Kirby. Crews then ensured the blaze did not extend anywhere else and vented the home.

Firefighters from the Norwalk Fire Department were requested to provide assistance.

Kirby said the incident should serve as a reminder to have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Westport Fire Marshal's Office.
