Prayagraj: Chants of 'Ganpati Bappa Morya' echoed on the roads of Sangam city on Saturday as a large number of devotees, arriving in groups, immersed the idol of Lord Ganesh. A bright day and humid conditions dominating the day, could not deter the enthusiasm and fervour of the devotees.Several puja samitis moved toward the pond at Andhawa to immerse the idol of Lord Ganesh. A tinge of sadness filled the air in the city as the Ganesh Puja celebrations came to an end with the immersion of the splendid idols of Lord Ganesh. At the same time, in a few pockets, idols from several households of the city were immersed in different other water bodies of the city. Groups of devotees danced and sang on their way to immerse the idol while throwing gulal at each other. Young boys and girls, along with seniors of the family, were seen dancing to the hit numbers and offering prasad to the onlookers on the way.Before taking the idol for immersion, the devotees offered mahabhog to the deity, and the prasad was distributed to all. The last aarti was also performed in the puja pandals and homes from where the Ganesh was given a warm adieu. Around 500 small and big idols of the Ganesha were immersed at Andhawa and also in makeshift ponds made by the devotees. This year, there were several puja samitis in the city which worshipped the Lord in the footsteps of the state of Maharashtra and other parts of the country. "With the aim of protecting water bodies from pollution, we have decided to immerse the idol within our own premises," said a member of Maharashtra Lok Seva Mandal. Along with the puja samitis, there were scores of households in the city which installed the idols in their homes and worshipped the deity for ten days.
