Angel Reese, the Chicago Sky's standout forward, is at the center of controversy after making public comments that have strained her relationship with the team.
The two-time All-Star, known for her impressive performances on the court, expressed dissatisfaction with the team's current roster and hinted at potential changes if improvements weren't made.
In a recent interview with the Chicago Tribune, Reese voiced her frustrations, stating, "I'm not settling for the same s**t we did this year. We have to get good players. We have to get great players. That's a nonnegotiable for me."
She further emphasized her commitment to playing alongside top-tier talent, adding, "I'm willing and wanting to play with the best. And however I can help to get the best here, that's what I'm going to do this offseason to make sure we attract the best of the best."
These remarks, while reflecting her ambition, were perceived by some as critical of her current teammates and the organization's direction.
Following the backlash, Reese clarified her statements after a victory over the Connecticut Sun, expressing regret if her words were misunderstood.
She stated, "I probably am frustrated [with] myself right now. I think the language is taken out of context. I really didn't intentionally mean to put down my teammates... They've busted their ass, just like I've busted my ass."
Reese apologized to her teammates, acknowledging the need to be more mindful of her language moving forward.
Despite her apology, the Chicago Sky decided to suspend Reese for the first half of their upcoming game against the Las Vegas Aces on September 7.
The team released a statement emphasizing their commitment to accountability and team unity.
"The Chicago Sky values the safety, respect, and well-being of every player. We are committed to accountability so our players can stay focused on playing basketball.
"Because of statements detrimental to the team made by Angel Reese during league-mandated media, she will not play in the first half of the game on September 7 against the Las Vegas Aces."
The move has sparked widespread discussion among fans and analysts. Social media reactions largely support Reese, with one fan writing, "She needs to leave that trash organization the first chance she gets." Another added, "If I'm Angel I'm requesting a trade."
Reese is under contract through the 2026 season, with a team option for 2027. Her comments and the suspension highlight potential friction between the star forward and the franchise.
