This document outlines key infection prevention and control (IPC) principles for safely administering mpox vaccines. Standard precautions should be followed, including ensuring a clean, well-ventilated environment and providing training for health workers and information for the public. Vaccination delivery should align with national IPC guidance, include proper waste management, and avoid unnecessary PPE use.
KEY MESSAGES
* Standard precautions (1) should be applied during mpox vaccination activities. Individuals receiving a vaccine should not have signs or symptoms of mpox.
* A clean, hygienic (2) and well-ventilated environment (3) with adequate space that facilitates prevention and control (IPC) practices is necessary during mpox vaccination activities.
* It is critical to provide health and care workers with specific training and the public with targeted information regarding IPC measures for safe mpox vaccine delivery.
* National guidance and protocols for IPC measures, including those related to mpox, should be consulted and adhered to.
* All vaccination efforts should include appropriate plans, resources and supplies for safely delivering the mpox vaccine and managing the waste (2, 4) that is generated from mpox vaccination activities.
* Vaccination activities can result in increased PPE use and waste, such as gloves, which are often unnecessary (5).
* This document was developed in the context of the WHO Director-General's declaration of a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) regarding the mpox upsurge in 2024. This document was published in February 2025.
