5 Eagles' free agents who could interest the Commanders

The Philadelphia Eagles are Super Bowl champions. On Sunday night in New Orleans, the Eagles dominated the Kansas City Chiefs, 40-22, to win Super Bowl LIX. It's Philadelphia's second Super Bowl championship in franchise history, with both coming in the past eight seasons.

Now that the Eagles are champions, the NFL world turns its attention to the offseason. That means the NFL combine, free agency and the 2025 NFL draft. As we know, no NFL team can carry the same roster into the following season. So, next year's Philadelphia roster will look different. The Eagles have several players scheduled for unrestricted free agency in March.

The Washington Commanders have roughly around $80 million in salary cap space for 2025. They should be active in free agency as general manager Adam Peters looks to build around superstar quarterback Jayden Daniels while on his rookie contract.

We look at five Philadelphia free agents who could make a big impact for the Commanders in 2025.

Baun turned 28 in December and finished his fifth NFL season with an All-Pro campaign and Super Bowl championship. The Eagles signed Baun to a one-year deal last March in one of the offseason's top bargains. The problem here is where Washington would play Baun. Frankie Luvu is a star for the Commanders, and Bobby Wagner is expected to return. Besides, Baun would not replace Wagner as the mike linebacker because he's more of an off-ball linebacker like Luvu. Still, the defense must improve and it would be up to head coach Dan Quinn and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. to make it work. You can never have enough good players. However, Baun is an unlikely target for Washington.

A former No. 11 overall pick by the Jets, Becton was another Howie Roseman bargain signing. Becton signed a one-year deal to play for legendary OL coach Jeff Stoutland and moved inside to guard. He was one of the NFL's best guards in 2024. Becton is entering his sixth NFL season and doesn't turn 26 until April. He will get paid. The Commanders could use an upgrade at left guard or sign Becton to play tackle. However, would a team want to pay Becton as a tackle after his career resurgence inside at guard?

You would need to trust your offensive line coach and their evaluation. Becton is due for a big raise, and it wouldn't surprise anyone if the Eagles allowed him to walk and focus on paying others, trusting Stoutland to find his replacement. The Commanders paid one guard (Sam Cosmi). So, it's doubtful they'll pay big money for another interior player. However, things could get interesting if Peters views him as a solution at tackle.

Fred Johnson is hitting unrestricted free agency at the perfect time. He will turn 28 in June and spent the past three seasons under the legendary Stoutland. Philadelphia's third offensive tackle, Johnson, appeared in every game with six starts in 2024. He played well in relief of Jordan Mailata. The Eagles would probably like to keep Johnson, but someone will give him a chance to start. He's earned that opportunity. Johnson is a bit of a journeyman, having played for four teams already, but really found a home with Philadelphia.

Washington will be looking for help at offensive tackle. Johnson makes some sense. He will not break the bank, allowing you also to spend elsewhere.

Josh Sweat turns 28 in March. He's been productive throughout his seven-year NFL career. Last season, Sweat recorded eight sacks. He is another player Philly will want to keep, but you can't pay everyone. Sweat earned himself a nice raise with his play over the last few seasons and he's still in the prime of his career. Sweat isn't a guy who will dominate games, but he does everything well. He can get to the quarterback but also does a good job of setting the edge against the run. The Commanders need that type of edge presence. Sweat is also scheduled for a big raise, but he's a player to watch for Washington.

Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis get most of the attention, but Milton Williams enjoyed a terrific 2024 season. A third-round pick in 2021, Williams recorded a career-high five sacks this past season and played a career-high 48% of Philadelphia's defensive snaps. Williams is another player due for a raise and a more significant role. When you think of the Commanders, you don't think of them adding more at defensive tackle. But, remember, Washington could move on from Jonathan Allen.

Adding Williams to the rotation with Daron Payne and Johnny Newton could be a solid interior trio for Washington. You also shouldn't bet against the Commanders keeping Allen. When he returned, Allen played well down the stretch, and Washington could extend him and lower his cap hit for 2025.

Williams may not be as high on Washington's potential list because of what the Commanders currently have at the position. Washington could also favor Dallas defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa, who Dan Quinn coached with the Cowboys.
