Macy's has shared a warning to customers enjoying lengthy discount sales amid the sad closure of 66 stores.
Two of those shops facing the axe very soon are located in Michigan.
They're expected to close by the end of March, reported The Detroit News on Monday.
The closures come months after the retailer announced it would be chopping 150 "underproductive" stores over three years as it struggles after a lackluster 2024.
The news has been confirmed by the state, which has published notices of layoffs and shuttering of Macy's stores at Sterling Heights and Troy.
This will result in 117 employees at Sterling Heights and a further 92 job losses at Troy, according to the notification.
Macy's letter to staff at Lakeside Circle, Sterling Heights, said: "The entire store is closing.
"Job eliminations are permanent and will occur between March 18 and March 31, 2025."
In its second letter, addressed to staff at Troy, Macy's wrote a similar notice, confirming that "the entire store is closing. Job eliminations are permanent and will occur between March 18 and March 31, 2025."
The looming closure will have a knock-on effect on clearance sales, warned The Detroit News.
It cited an email sent by Macy's spokesperson Stephanie Jimenez to staff on Monday, outlining the policy in regards to the stores' discounts - with the clock ticking on reduced prices.
Jimenez reportedly said that the clearance sales which began in January would only run for "approximately eight to 12 weeks."
The U.S. Sun has contacted Macy's for further comment on the closures, and impact on staff.
Macy's said in a statement on January 9 that the shuttering of 66 stores this year was part of a new financial strategy.
It added that its plan was aimed at "returning the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth."
This included "closing approximately 150 underproductive stores over a three-year period while investing in 350 Macy's locations through fiscal 2026."
Tony Spring, CEO of Macy's, said: "Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our... strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy's stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments."
He said that shoppers visiting the retailer's stores which had already undergone investment "are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service."
On Reddit, shoppers discussing the closure of 66 stores across the US in 2025 recently shared their likes and dislikes about the upmarket retailer.
One wrote: "Macy's sells a lot of fantastic brands and products. They also sell a lot of crap.
"Unfortunately, their stores have become an utterly stressful mess to shop in person.
"Good luck finding whatever it is you need, even if it is in stock there."
Another simply lamented that the mass shuttering was the "end of an era."
And one said: "For competition it would be good if Dillard's, JCPenny, [and] Macy's could stick around, but people don't go to big malls to shop like they used to."
Macy's stock shed more than 15% in the last twelve months, and in December, it slashed its annual profit forecast due to weak demand for its apparel and shoes.
The store closures in Michigan come as other well-known firms also shutter.
