The city of Chula Vista invites community members to provide input on how housing and community development funds should be spent over the next five years. Wings and Snow exhibit Sophie's Gallery & Gift Shop is hosting the Wings and Snow exhibit through Jan. 31 at 140 E. Main St. This year's show blends nature with art, and features bird mosaics, woodland animal paintings and cyanotype feather prints. There will be handmade gift items for sale by local artists. Sophie's Gallery's artists are students of St. Madeleine Sophie's Center, a nonprofit that educates and empowers individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Encinitas Chamber of Commerce seeks sponsors and exhibitors for its Community Resource Expo slated for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 8 at the Encinitas Community Center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive. Love Esco Day to "spread love and kindness to every part of Escondido" is Feb. 1. Community members can volunteer for various community projects to help beautify the city, serve the homeless, care for teachers and support local businesses. The kick-off party is from 8 to 10 a.m. Feb. 1 at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. Folks can join service projects during and after the kickoff. Highlights include free food, special guest appearances from local Escondido heroes, entertainment from performing arts groups, face painting and balloon art and contests along with interactive activities led by the SD Wave, San Diego Humane Society and San Diego Children's Discovery Museum. A group of Lemon Grove nonprofits will hold a community fundraiser for L.A. fire disaster relief from noon to 3 p.m. Feb. 1 at Treganza Park. Local clubs will sell food to raise money to help those affected by the fires. The Soroptimist International Club of Lemon Grove holds its 3rd annual "Stand Against Human Trafficking" walk for National Human Trafficking Intervention month at 9 a.m. Jan. 25 at 3131 School Lane. The event begins with a presentation by the county District Attorney's Office, and culminates in a walk to raise awareness about human trafficking.

Applications are being accepted for this year's Miss Oceanside Scholarship Pageant, sponsored by the Oceanside Sea Lions, which is part of Lions International. An orientation meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Feb. 24 at the Mission Branch Library, 3861 Mission Ave. Single girls, between the ages of 13-16 who are residents of Oceanside are eligible for the Teen Pageant, and ages 17-25 for the Miss Pageant. Contestants will receive pageant coaching on poise, presentation, interview skills and a question on stage. The annual pageant is scheduled for 6 p.m. May 10 at the Star Theater. Winners become ambassadors of goodwill for the city and for the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce and do community service throughout the year. The Oceanside Public Library will host a series of free monthly movie screenings and discussions through March in the Civic Center Library Community Room at 330 N. Coast Highway. Professor Garrett Chaffin-Quiray will discuss a new movie series: Media Circus. The library will screen three films that "explore how celebrity, ego, and satire all contribute to the media landscape of yesterday and today." Chaffin-Quiray, a professor of Cinema Studies at Palomar College, will explain the artistic and sociological character of the films and lead a discussion. No registration is required. The 35th annual San Diego International Jewish Film Festival runs from Jan. 27-Feb. 8, and will be both in-person and virtual. The festival will showcase a variety of the top contemporary Jewish-related films. The nonprofit Muchas Manos de San Diego, a group of stitching enthusiasts, is participating in the nationwide Stitch In Public Day, where folks can show their needlework skills to the community. The event is from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Feb. 1 at the Mira Mesa library, 8405 New Salem St. The group will offer free cross-stitch and embroidery kits to anyone interested in learning to stitch. The nonprofit POZabilities holds "A Sweet Affair," a dessert and wine social featuring a silent auction, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 1 in the Recital Hall at Balboa Park, 2130 Pan American W. Road. Highlights include an array of gourmet desserts crafted by local bakers and a selection of wines. The silent auction will feature a variety of items, ranging from baskets to local art. The duo "Four Shillings Short," will present music, poetry & folklore for the Celtic Bonfire Festival of Spring from 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 31 in Hall of Nations, at the Balboa Park International Cottages, 2191 Pan American Road, West. The Ancient Celtic Bonfire Festival of Imbolc marked the coming of spring and was celebrated at the beginning of February, marking the half-way point between the winter solstice and spring equinox. The nonprofit San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association will give introductory woodworking classes for ages 18 and older at 5360 Eastgate Mall. North Island Credit Union Foundation offers scholarships to college-bound high school seniors and community college students transferring to a four-year university who live in San Diego and Riverside counties. Students must maintain a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 to participate.
