Man arrested 45 minutes after alleged N.J. machete attack, cops say

Authorities have arrested a man who allegedly attacked a woman with a machete at an apartment building in Bergen County.

Jose G. Corea, 37, of Fairview, was taken into custody on Tuesday about 45 minutes after the attack allegedly occurred, the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office said. He is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, weapons offenses and resisting arrest.

Shortly after 10 a.m. on Tuesday, police responded to a reported assault at the building, which is located on Day Avenue in Fairfield. Officers on the scene found a 49-year-old woman with a large wound to the head, officials said.

Detectives alleged Corea, a resident of the building, approached the woman near the common stairwell and struck her several times in the head with a machete before fleeing the area.

The woman is still being treated at Hackensack University Medical Center and is listed in stable condition, authorities said.

Corea was on River Road in the nearby borough of Edgewater when officers spotted him and placed him under arrest. He is now in custody at Bergen County Jail pending his first court appearance.
