Annie Tritsch and her children describe Allegheny RiverTrail Park in Aspinwall as a magical place where they spend time collecting pinecones, exploring trails and roller skating.
"It's a beautiful place for kids to connect with nature and see the river, run and play," Tritsch said.
A summer kick-off at the park will feature fun, food and fitness in an effort to connect even more people to the riverfront amenities.
River Rec Day, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 1, is a must-do for outdoor enthusiasts, organizers said.
"We'll highlight recreation, health and wellness, environmental stewardship and local small businesses," said Dee Stathis, the park's executive director. "It's part of our ongoing mission to connect people to the outdoors, promote healthy living and support our community partners."
The family-friendly event is free and open to the public.
Allegheny RiverTrail Park, entering its 14th year, has grown to include a fishing dock, fenced dog park, walking trails, playground and kayak launch. The picturesque campus is a place where people gather for yoga, concerts, theater and drum circles.
"It's a place that really invites curiosity, connection and joy for everyone," Tritsch said. "We hope families will come out and see what makes this park such a special community space."
It is the mission of the park board to enhance and encourage connections to the riverfront and parklands, Stathis said.
The Rec Day is presented in partnership with state Rep. Mandy Steele, D-Fox Chapel, who said Lower Valley residents are fortunate to have beautiful natural resources in the region.
"The river is a great place to connect people to the natural world, a worthy pursuit," Steele said. "Time spent outdoors can be grounding and restorative for people, and especially for children."
Steele said she considers the park a regional asset and enjoys spending time there with her family.
On June 1, attractions will include kayaking, fitness classes, live music and food trucks. There will be more than 20 local vendors and activity partners in all.
Some event highlights will be fishing demos by the PA Fish and Boat Commission, bike maintenance clinics by Cottlebuilt, native plant education with Wild Ones, rowing on ERG machines with Fox Chapel Crew, nature activities with Functional Roots and chair massages from BAM.
Live acoustic music will be provided by Pittsburgh artist Chet Vincent.
"The park will be bustling with organizations from all over Pittsburgh that focus on fun, education, safety and the outdoor environment," Stathis said. "It's all right along the riverfront. It's a chance for families to connect with nature, try something new and celebrate community."
