Conservationists and fans celebrated as an 11-year-old Kruger lion, long admired for his resilience, was spotted healthy again after weeks of worry.
After weeks of concern and speculation, Casper, the iconic white lion of Kruger National Park, has made a dramatic return, looking stronger and healthier than ever.
Letaba Herald reports that, in a recent Facebook post by the African Bush Kingdom, they said that for more than three weeks, the 11-year-old lion vanished into the wilderness after receiving veterinary treatment for injuries to his face and mouth.
The disappearance left visitors and wildlife enthusiasts fearing the worst - that the legendary lion had died or been euthanised.
But last weekend, in a moment that has thrilled conservationists and fans alike, Casper was spotted along the S40 stretch of road in the Kruger.
"Despite inevitable signs of ageing, he looked remarkably well. His resilience is nothing short of extraordinary," read the post.
"Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Casper has re-emerged from the bush looking stronger, healthier and majestic."
News of Casper's ordeal began when visitors photographed him with a swollen face and visible wounds, sparking fears that he might have contracted anthrax or been bitten by a snake.
South African National Parks later confirmed that his injuries were consistent with a fight with another lion, ruling out serious disease.
At his age, Casper is already considered an elder among wild male lions, most of which rarely live beyond 12 years.
He is one of the last surviving males from a once-dominant coalition of four brothers, whose territory in the Satara region has since been claimed by younger, stronger males.
African Bush Kingdom said that surviving for over a decade away from their natural environment is a rare feat.
Over the years, Casper has lived a tenacious life defined by courage and brute strength. 'From survival to establishing his pride and then defending territory', his return after this latest health scare has only strengthened his legend.
"He is more than just a lion," said the post. "He is a symbol of endurance, a living legend, and a testament to the wild spirit of Africa. Long live Casper. Long live the Ghost of Kruger!"
