Winter storm alters schedule for area Class A and B boys basketball region tournaments

The postseason journey for a number of area Class A and B high school boys basketball teams was altered because of Mother Nature on Tuesday.

A winter storm caused first-round games in Region 2A and 6A and second-round games in Region 1B and 2B to be pushed back to Friday, with Fridat's semifinal games being moved back to Saturday.

First-round games in Region 1A and second-round games in Region 6B were held as planned. Class B regions did have a handful of play-in games on Monday.

Here are some highlights and schedule updates:

Second-seeded Aberdeen Roncalli, No. 3 Milbank and No. 4 Britton-Hecla each posted first-round wins on Tuesday.

At Roncalli, the host Cavaliers (10-11) rolled to a 79-34 win over No. 7 Redfield (2-19). In the second game, Milbank (11-10) beat No. 6 Webster Area (5-16) 51-20.

Thomas Kuecker had seven points and Ian Lesnar seven rebounds for Webster Area.

At Britton, Britton-Hecla slipped past No. 5 Sisseton (7-14) 51-49. The Braves led 47-46 before getting a free throw from William Richter with 18.2 seconds left, another free throw from Daniel Person with 13.9 seconds left and two more free throws from Chaz Vietor with 4.5 seconds remaining. Sisseton's Carter Stickland drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Complete stats were not reported.

In quarterfinal games on Tuesday, top-seeded Sully Buttes turned back No. 8 North Central 65-34, No. 2 Ipswich downed No. 10 Tiospaye Topa 63-29, No. 3 Wakpala held off No. 6 Highmore-Harrold 59-53 and No. 5 Potter County edged No. 4 Faulkton Area 58-56.

Ipswich (12-8) received 15 points from Kyle Hettich, 14 points and seven rebounds from Max Kulesa, 13 points from Jaxon Holt and eight points and 11 rebounds from Tucker Kadlec. Jacolby Rousseau paced Tiospaye Topa (6-15) with 14 points.

PREP BASKETBALL RATINGS: Hamlin, Castlewood and Leola-Frederick Area boys open postseason as ranked teams

Jhett Simon drove coast-to-coast and scored with two seconds left to lift Potter County (8-13). He led the Battlers with 21 points. Landon Larson added 14 and Jerand Chase nine. Korbin Stark scored 22 points, Weston Senn 14, Gian DiMaria 11 and Spencer Melius eight for Faulkton Area (8-13).

Sully Buttes improved to 16-4 and Wakpala 11-9. Highmore-Harrold ended its season at 6-15 and North Central 8-14. No statistics were reported from those games.

In opening games on Monday, No. 8 North Central slipped past No. 9 Herreid-Selby Area 45-42 and No. 10 Tiospaye Topa handled No. 7 Sunshine Bible Academy 63-52. HSA ended its season at 4-17 and SBA at 5-12.

Rousseau tallied 24 points and nine rebounds, Laken Traversie 16 points and Steven Garnette 11 for Tiospaye Topa. Trey Thieman (13 points), Jerome Big Eagle (12 points and eight rebounds) and Owan Watson (nine points) paced SBA.

Tuesday's first-round games were pushed back to Friday because of Tuesday's winter storm. Games include No. 5 Sioux Valley (11-9) at No. 4 Florence-Henry(13-7), 6 p.m. in Florence; No. 7 Great Plains Lutheran (10-10) at No. 2 Clark-Willow Lake (15-4), 6 p.m. in Clark; and No. 6 Elkton-Lake Benton (12-8) at No. 3 Deuel (14-6), 6 p.m. in Clear Lake.

Semifinal games were moved from Friday to Saturday with the Sioux Valley/Florence-Henry visiting No. 1 Hamlin (18-2) at 7 p.m. and the GPL-CWL and ELB-Deuel winners playing at the highest seed.

Tuesday's first-round games were pushed back to Friday because of Tuesday's winter storm. Games include No. 5 Miller (11-9) at No. 4 Platte-Geddes (13-7), 5:30 p.m. in Platte; No. 7 Crow Creek (7-13) at No. 2 Stanley County (5-15), 7 p.m. in Fort Pierre; and No. 6 Chamberlain (5-15) at No. 3 Mobridge-Pollock (12-8), 6 p.m. in Mobridge.

Semifinal games were moved from Friday to Saturday with the Miller/PG winner visiting No. 1 Cheyenne-Eagle Butte (15-5) at 1 p.m. and the Crow Creek-Stanley County and Chamberlain/Mobridge-Pollock winners facing off at the highest seed.

Tuesday's second-round games were pushed back to Friday because of Tuesday's winter storm. Games include No. 8 Wilmot (7-14) at No. 1 Leola-Frederick Area (18-2), 6 p.m. in Leola; No. 5 Warner (8-12) at No. 4 Waverly-South Shore (12-8), 7 p.m. in Waverly; No. 7 Hitchcock-Tulare (7-14) at No. 2 Aberdeen Christian (15-5), 7 p.m. and No. 6 Northwestern (9-11) at No. 3 Waubay-Summit (13-7), 7 p.m. in Summit.

Semifinal games were moved from Friday to Saturday at the highest seed.

On Monday, No. 8 Wilmot handled No. 9 Tiospa Zina 76-36 at home and No. 7 Hithcock-Tulare topped No. 10 Langford Area 63-50 in a game played at Tulare.

No statistics were reported for Wilmot and Tiospa Zina. Patrick Maynard scored 22 points, Devin Enander 17 and Preston Wipf 11 for Hitchcock-Tulare, which overcame a 37-point outburst by Kassen Keough of Langford Area (3-18). Dylan Harmon snared 14 rebounds and Conner Glines 10 for the Lions.

Games include No. 8 Iroquois-Lake Preston (8-13) at No. 1 Castlewood (18-2), 6 p.m.; No. 5 De Smet (12-8) vs. No. 4 Estelline-Hendricks (16-4) vs. No. 5 De Smet, 7:30 p.m. in Castlewood; No. 7 James Valley Christian (13-8) at No. 2 Wessington Springs (18-2), 6 p.m.; and No. 6 Deubrook Area (9-11) vs No. 3 Wolsey-Wessington (16-4) at 7:30 p.m. in Wessington Springs.

Semifinal games were moved from Friday to Saturday at Dakota State University in Madison at 4 and 5:30 p.m.

On Monday, No. 8 Iroquois-Lake Preston defeated No. 9 Arlington 63-48 at Iroquois and No. 7 James Valley Christian won at home 76-64 over No. 10 Oldham-Ramona-Rutland. Arlington finished 1-20 and ORR 3-18.

Ervin Carter's 22 points and 11 rebounds and Lucas Peskey's 11 and 10 paced ILP. Peskey also made seven steals. Paxton Rheault scored 16 points and Miles Antonen 12 for Arlington.
