Missing West Columbia man identified from remains found by utility worker

CAYCE, S.C. -- Human skeletal remains found by a utility worker in Lexington County have been identified as a missing man last seen in 2022.

The Lexington County Coroner's Office announced on Thursday that skeletal human remains found in a wooded area off of Charleston Highway in Cayce belong to 62-year-old Wayne Alan Marcolini of West Columbia, who was reported missing in January 2023.

West Columbia Police said a friend last saw him in November 2022 and reported him missing after not having contact for two months. A Dominion Energy worker found his remains on Jan. 19, 2025, and recovery efforts continued into the next day with the help of an anthropologist.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said Marcolini's cause of death and manner of death are still under investigation. The coroner's office, Cayce Police Department and West Columbia Police Department are investigating the case.
