Georgia basketball vs. Arkansas today: Razorbacks closing in on Bulldogs in 2nd half

Georgia basketball is still seeking its first SEC road win of the season.

The Bulldogs have two victories over ranked conference opponents at home but faded in the second half of losses at Ole Miss and Tennessee.

They play Wednesday night at Arkansas against a Razorbacks team desperate for a win after starting 0-5 in SEC play in John Calipari's first season with the Razorbacks. Arkansas is 11-7 overall.

"They're very talented, they run good stuff," Georgia coach Mike White said on his radio show Monday. "Cal's a Hall of Famer. They're going to figure it out. I hope they're not at their best Wednesday as we're trying to figure ourselves out, especially offensively."

White attributed that in part to live-ball turnovers. He said the staff is diving into being more productive on offense. The Bulldogs (14-4, 2-3 SEC) are 14th in the SEC in league games at 65.8 points per game.

Georgia carries a two-game losing streak into the game.

"We've got to make a big offensive jump here in these remaining SEC games," White said.

Georgia 6-foot-11 freshman Asa Newell leads the Bulldogs at 15.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per game, but Arkansas assistant Chin Coleman told reporters the Razorbacks like being able to match up with 6-8 Adou Thiero (16.4 ppg, 6.0 rpg) and 6-10 Trevion Brazille (1.6 blocks per game) against him.

Arkansas has taken advantage of three Georgia turnovers in less than two minutes and has closed to 52-47 with 9:55 to go.

The Razorbacks are on a 6-0 run. Mike White calls timeout.

Arkansas cut the Georgia lead to 9 again, but two Somto Cyril free throws gave Georgia a 52-41 lead.

Asa Newell is on the bench with three fouls.

RJ Godfrey and Asa Newell put together three-point plays after Arkansas cut Georgia's lead to 9. The Bulldogs hold a 46-31 lead with 15:58 to go.

Georgia holds a 38-26 halftime lead, the third time the Bulldogs have gone to the intermission on the road with a halftime lead in SEC play, but they held slim leads at Tennessee and Ole Miss and lost.

Kentucky transfer Zvonimir Ivisic hit a 3 before the half to make the Razorbacks 1 of 11 on 3s.

Blue Cain has 8 points and Asa Newell 7 to lead Georgia.

Asa Newell scored his first points on a pair of inside buckets including a jump hook. The Bulldogs lead 32-19 with 3:39 to go in the half. Arkansas is 8 of 24 shooting. Georgia has limited turnovers to just 3.

Sophomore Silas Demary hits back-to-back 3-pointers, the second from the corner, to push the Georgia lead to 23-12. The Bulldogs are 4 of 6 on 3s. Arkansas is 0 of 8.

Georgia used an 8-0 run to extend its lead and now leads 15-8 with 11:14 to go in the first half. Blue Cain has 8 points including a pair of 3s. Arkansas is 4 of 13 shooting including 0 of 6 on 3s.

Arkansas is missing point guard Boogie Fland and has started slow on offense. The Razorbacks are 2 of 7 shooting with 2 turnovers.

Georgia leads 7-4 at the first media timeout, getting a Blue Cain 3-pointer.

Georgia's starting five remains the same: Silas Demary, Tyrin Lawrence, Blue Cain, RJ Godfrey and Asa Newell.

Arkansas' starting lineup: Johnell Davis, D.J. Wagner, Adou Thiero, Jonas Aidoo and Karter Knox.

Arkansas freshman guard Boogie Fland is out. The school announced this evening that he underwent thumb surgery in New York.
